Stephen Boshoff's FLY ROD

Stephen Boshoff's Small Stream Centre Axis Fly Rod.
There is lot going on in the South African fly fishing community, which is very definitely worth paying close attention to......
There are some passionate, highly skilled and knowledgable anglers there, who are producing some superb fly fishing literature and developing innovative and original techniques and tackle. They are especially keen on and expert at, ultra-light small stream fly fishing and the tackle that goes with it.
(For those of you who want to find out more, I recommend you start by visiting Tom Sutcliffe's brilliant website, The Spirit of Fly Fishing.)
From this fertile environment comes Stephen Boshoff's Small Stream Special, centre axis fly rod concept. The full story of the development of this rod can be read in Ed Herbst's fascinating article In Search of The Ultimate Small stream fly Rod on Tom's website.
What works in South Africa, should work elsewhere and these very special rods should be of interest to any one who (like me) is a lover of small stream fly fishing.

The Alternative Tackle & Stephen Boshoff
If you are interested in finding out more about Stephen's rods, Please contact me.
At the Time of writing (September 2011) Stephen is planning on making a Small Stream centre axis rod using a Steffen Brothers Fibreglass 6'6" 2-3wt. blank and with a specially commissioned Danielsson Original Midge centre axis mount fly reel. (Stephen's centre axis rods have their origins in a Kurt Danielsson concept from the 1980s)
This rod will be an Alternative Tackle sample rod and available for you to try, if you'd like to.
We have to first wait for the reel to be made by Danielsson before Stephen can start on the rod.....
so it may be a while before its available.
I'll update this page with news on the rods progress as soon as I get it....

Stephen Boshof and his rods
Stephen is a custom rod maker, making only a very small number of rods a year. His rods are superbly crafted, functional and highly sought after. He works in bamboo, fibreglass and graphite and can produce his centre axis rods in any of these materials. For his bamboo rods, he can provide either a traditional ferrule or a spliced ferrule, if required.
His centre axis handles/reel seats are sometimes all cork but more often feature carefully selected, African hardwoods. Stephen also makes nets (watch this space!)
