The XLW concept is based on requests that we have received from fisher-men who use our products. It’s simply a combination of proven technologies that we use in our current products, together with solutions that we used during the nineties and that we now have refined to their optimal functionality. Introduced early in 2010
To those of you who used our disc brake reels in the nineties, its quite enough to say ”large drag adjustment wheel” and you will know what we’re talking about, and to those who
are uninitiated we want to say this:
The XLW-series has a drag adjustment that is exceptionally easy to reach when you are in the most hectic situations and due to its design it’s a cinch to quickly adjust the drag to the level you want.
Moreover, the XLW series has borrowed many components from the existing L5W/H5D series, such as the high-performance brake package that can be tailored to fulfil each individual fisherman’s needs. Another thing that is borrowed is the spool, which is a great advantage for those who already have such a reel and now can use that spool also on his new reel.

Danielsson on the Danielsson Control series reels These reels have fine tuned mechanics that can’t be matched. The drag knob sets the minimum level and then you apply more via the handle. The handle is very slimmed to the housing so there is no chance for line lockup. The design has been remade in the way that each reel is slightly lighter that earlier, without comprehending the structural integrity. These reels are built for tough conditions. The way the drag operates can be compared to a car's braking system and is very intuitive and easy to control. The reels are built with a very few high strength components, this guarantees that the reels will perform well for many years. We have seen that in practice the reel will significantly increase chances of landing fish. This is a direct result of the unique method of being able to control the fish. We have a couple of customers that have started to fish with the control reels. They have kept statistics on their salmon fishing during many years. When they started to fish with control reels they increased their numbers of landed salmon by 50 %. One of them is now up to 92 % salmon landed. They confirm that this increase is all due to the control reels. This might be hard to comprehend, but remember that many people didn’t think that the large arbor reels would be successful; now the large arbor is a world standard, this is all due to our Original reels. At first glance, Control reels appear to function like typical anti-reverse fly reels: when fish run the drag system lets out line without the reel handle turning. There the similarity ends, however. Whereas in traditional anti-reverse reel systems cranking power never exceeds braking power, Control reels incorporate a unique power converter that automatically increases resistance (drag) when you crank the handle, and reduces drag when you let the handle go. By pairing maximum cranking power with the ability to immediately reduce tension when fish jump or make sudden, lunging runs, incidents of broken tippets, shattered rods and bent hooks can be minimised – chances of landing trophy tarpon, sailfish or salmon maximised.
How it works:
The multiple disc clutch type brake is developed from our earlier systems, and has proven to be very reliable under harsh conditions. The main drag knob and a fine-tuning knob allow for extremely precise drag settings. The big news, however, is the fighting brake, which automatically significantly increases the drag setting as soon as the handle is cranked a mere 1.5 centimetres; stop forcing the handle and the brake immediately reverts to the original drag-knob setting. Because of this engineering breakthrough, anglers no longer have to let go of the handle when fighting fish, providing hitherto unattainable levels of control.
Other features:
- Control reels afford the unique benefit of having the handle on the frame side. This prevents the risk of finger injuries from rotating spools: remember, some species can run at speeds up to 100km/h. - Control reels are waterproof to 100 meters, another important feature of reliability. By placing the handle on the frame side we only need two sealant rings, minimising idle friction. - The frame-side handle also makes changing spools a breeze, as opposed to the complicated, time consuming chore typical of other anti-reverse reels. - The overall mechanical feeling is smooth and tight; just cranking the reel is highly addictive.
