Kurt Danielsson of Smedjebacken, a little village in the middle of Sweden, invented the first Large Arbor reels in the early 1980s. Kurt had decided to resume an earlier interest fly-fishing, and in the process provided himself with a complete fly-fishing outfit. He was pleased with the equipment, except for one thing, the reel.

The small diameter of the fly reel spool had the fly line coming off in tight coils, which made it nearly impossible to shoot line. And when a fish ran, the diameter of the line on the spool changed and outgoing drag increased. But if the fish stopped while the spool still was spinning it overran and the line tangled itself. Several visits to fly fishing dealers increased Kurt's collection of fly reels from the world's leading makers, but they all demonstrated similar deficiencies. He was faced with a simple fact, there was no truly satisfactory reel on the market.

Kurt's occupation as a fabricator involved him almost daily in innovation and invention and he began thinking about how to solve his problems with fly reels. It soon became clear to him that a fly line should be wound on a large, rather than a small diameter spool and that the spool itself should be as light as possible in order to decrease its moving mass as it rotated. A turning and milling machine was purchased and Kurt created a fly fishing-reel that fulfilled all his expectations. The first large arbor reel was born! About one year later Kurt got his worldwide patent approved. Kurt's large arbor reel made it possible to fish very light leaders due to low starting inertia, to almost completely eliminate spool overrun, to cast longer thanks to reduced line memory and to quickly retrieve line back onto the spool.

Word of Kurt's mysterious new reels spread rapidly. Their strikingly different design had some fly fishers sceptical at first, but after testing the reels they soon realised the design's advantages. Demand increased and today Danielsson Innovation AB has a modern plant where everything from manufacturing to assembly takes place.
Danielsson LW Reels
Danielsson fly reels originated from an analysis of what was missing, functionally, from traditional fly reels. Using this approach we came up with the technical solutions needed to create the reel we wanted - the very first Original. The Original model still has no competition when it comes to low spool weight and low starting resistance. Here's what it delivers: Minimal line memory - Line that comes off the spool in a coil - as is common with small diameter/small arbor reels - won't run cleanly through the guides. And if the line lies straight on the water, it's also easier to hook the fish. A large arbor spool with greater width. Low starting inertia and low risk of spool overrun - These features make possible the use of lighter tippets, often required make shy fish take the fly. Not only does a light spool mass mean low risk of overruun, if the fish runs suddenly, the lightweight spool reacts faster, which dramatically increases the chance of landing the fish. The large diameter and the low weight of the spool, together with the unique bearing against the inside rim of the spool creates an extremely low rotating mass. Fast line retrieve – A definitive advantage when a fish runs toward you. The large arbor - Low total weight – Provides good balance with modern lightweight rods. All parts of the design stabilize each other, making it possible to optimise the use of specific materials in each part. The result is a reel that is simultaneously incredibly strong and incredibly light. Exceptional durability – For reliability in all conditions. High strength anodized aluminum for the best corrosion and wear resistance. Other components of stainless steel or Delrin®. Danielsson's Original is a good choice for all light-line fishing, while still having the strength for larger fish. Click on the drop down menus below to order. Available in left and right hand wind.
Midge
Midge- The perfect reel for the lightest fishing: a lightweight, large arbor model made for light lines and the lightest tippets. The Midge's low weight balances small rods nicely. Line 0-2, capacity WF2F-50yd 20lbs, weight 78 gms, outer diameter 83 mm. Priced at £163.00. Spools priced at £84.00.
Original Series

This model isn't likely to need any introduction. The Danielsson Original set a new standard for fly reels when it was released in 1983 and it began the large arbor revolution.

As a result, the Original - which other manufacturers rushed to imitate for it's superior concept - is now the most copied reel in the world.

This simple and by now classic design offers easy, trouble-free handling. The light weight, large diameter spool counters the risk of spool overrun and at the same time makes for fast line retrieval.

Risk of losing a fish is minimised, which makes possible the use of very light tippets on shy fish. The large arbor concept is no longer new, but the Danielsson Original is still the absolute favourite among many expert fly fishers.

Features:

Frame and spool of high strength aluminium. Other components in stainless steel and Delrin®. A low spool weight that prevents overrunning with an overall low total weight and good balance. A fast line retrieve and an easy-clean design.
