Kurt Danielsson of Smedjebacken, a little village in the middle of Sweden, invented the first Large Arbor reels in the early 1980s. Kurt had decided to resume an earlier interest fly-fishing, and in the process provided himself with a complete fly-fishing outfit. He was pleased with the equipment, except for one thing, the reel. The small diameter of the fly reel spool had the fly line coming off in tight coils, which made it nearly impossible to shoot line. And when a fish ran, the diameter of the line on the spool changed and outgoing drag increased. But if the fish stopped while the spool still was spinning it overran and the line tangled itself. Several visits to fly fishing dealers increased Kurt's collection of fly reels from the world's leading makers, but they all demonstrated similar deficiencies. He was faced with a simple fact, there was no truly satisfactory reel on the market.Kurt's occupation as a fabricator involved him almost daily in innovation and invention and he began thinking about how to solve his problems with fly reels. It soon became clear to him that a fly line should be wound on a large, rather than a small diameter spool and that the spool itself should be as light as possible in order to decrease its moving mass as it rotated. A turning and milling machine was purchased and Kurt created a fly fishing-reel that fulfilled all his expectations. The first large arbor reel was born! About one year later Kurt got his worldwide patent approved. Kurt's large arbor reel made it possible to fish very light leaders due to low starting inertia, to almost completely eliminate spool overrun, to cast longer thanks to reduced line memory and to quickly retrieve line back onto the spool.Word of Kurt's mysterious new reels spread rapidly. Their strikingly different design had some fly fishers sceptical at first, but after testing the reels they soon realised the design's advantages. Demand increased and today Danielsson Innovation AB has a modern plant where everything from manufacturing to assembly takes place. Available in left and right hand wind.
Danielsson FW - LW - HD. These models set a new standard for modern fly reels, a drag system able to withstand any fishing situation. Tough enough to handle anything from extreme temperatures to sand and salt water. These reels are easy to handle, require a minimum of maintenance and, of course, look great and take fly reel design to it's next level, whilst remaining the most functional reels on the market today. Specifications: Waterproof for complete reliability. All three models have been tested in a pressure chamber and in a dishwater with a water temperature of 90°C • Silk smooth drag operation that keeps a constant drag on a chosen level without overruns or other nasty surprises, in all conditions. Materials used in the drag are the best available • Quick and easy spool changing system, with no loose parts • Minimum to maximum drag settings within 330 degrees rotation of the drag knob. Minimum drag setting is adjustable • Anodized to the highest possible corrosion resistance. Not affected by salt water • Made from anodized high tensile strength aluminum and stainless steel • Easy change retrieve from Left to Right hand retrieve. LW25-FRAM - The outstanding reel for lighter fishing with single handed rods, with a smooth drag to provide exceptional control. Line 2-5, capacity WF4F-80yd 20lbs, weight 150 gms, outer diameter 83 mm. Priced at £228.00. Spools priced at £95.00.
Light Weight A drag system needs to be completely waterproof to be reliable and must withstand any condition the angler might encounter. It also has to be easy to handle and should require almost no maintenance. Danielsson's extreme requirements as to function, materials and manufacture have resulted in exactly such a drag system, completely sealed to the highest industrial standards and impervious to the dirt and water that are the Achilles' heel of other reels. Danielsson also wanted to maintain the advantages of light weight and a large arbor and the result was the LW series. Almost as lightweight as the Original and FW models and with an astounding braking ability, the LW is a superior reel for single-handed fly rods that you can trust to get the job done.
